Ultramarine by Djartistknight Ultramarine by Djartistknight
"Oh my...another finished piece already?!" I hear you cry...well,t'is true!
Yes indeedy, whilst i normally enjoy my painting anyway, some models seem to paint themselves, and this guy is definately one of them! :D
As im sure most of you will be aware, this is the brilliant,4 piece snap together captain from the 40k "Assault on Black Reach" box set, sculpted by the excellent Dave Thomas. I've loved this model since i saw the tiny picture in a promotional leaflet...i knew i'd end up painting him at some point! :D
So...a few points...
1) Theres a running joke in my local store that all i do is paint various shades of brown...whilst this MIGHT be true *sniffs* and normally i take it in my stride (its my style, dagnabbit) it recently DID make me think "can i work other colours into my pallette?" and so...i decided to make this chap an Ultramarine. They're often depicted as the clean cut, stereotypical example of a Space Marine Chapter, and in certain circles, get called "vanilla" and "a bit boring"...so i wanted to try and toughen the image up! I've worked my usual metallics and dirty effects, and then tried out some new stuff, adding some depth with colours, chipped armour and of course...BLUE!
I'm pretty happy with what ive ended up with, and, whilst i never normally time myself,i can confidently say i spent about 16 hours on this one...
2) Another aim for this piece was to show that you dont need an uber conversion for a decent result,i know a lot of my work is kit bashed, sculpted or whatever, and i get a lot of "i wish i could do that" comments...which is nice, but i feel perhaps that can be a bit disheartening to people that have just started the hobby...i know the feeling, been there! So this one is to show that you can take a model out of your starter set,and if you do the best job you can,end up with something to be proud of :)
3) I cant claim credit for the base...whilst i painted it,it was constructed by ~das-fet ... part of his ongoing battle to make me do better bases...
4) Finally, the last reason i painted this particular model,~witch-of-chaos submitted a version of this guy recently, and made me think "ah yea...i have him sitting around!"
So thanks for that Lola ;)
I hope you boys and gals like him...I have the Ork Warboss waiting to be done, and i've never painted an Ork before...
Hmm!

It's just plain awesome. Period.

I've been stumbling across this mini around various photos on the net, and, yeah I found him mostly boring, but unpainted he looked like having potential. And this potential is clearly showed here! Great job!

Looks like he can jump into a movie right away :)

Besides, I wander what skills are required to make a trim pattern on the cloak, like here :D And to make it look that well :)

Just thought to give them a darker feel... they get a lot of stick for being "boring" and "vanilla"

HOly.... I love the way you paint your models, the muted colors and the gritty look it has, makes it more classic and less "toy". Keep it up!

Ooooh, i do like the subtleness of the blues most ultramarine armies i see (including my own =/, although they're eagle warriors to their half n half skull white and blue) are the complete deep blue ultramarines blue colour. Out of interest what model is this?

On a side note you can move around at your local games workshop?! BLASPHEMY!
My local gamesworkshop is pretty much a box -_-... its literally, a 12 feet by 15 feet rectangle... more like a newsagents size lol, infact... ive seen larger newsagents. =(

This is just the plastic captain out of the Black Reach starter box... 4 piece clip together figure!
Our store is pretty big, we're fortunate enough to be one of 12 or so Battle Bunkers across the country, meaning we have another room with 8 6 foot by 4 foot tables too...
Although admittedly thats of no interest to me lol I just paint ;)

AH the black reach set, yeah now it makes sense, i was wondering for a while just where that model came from lol.

Hmm sounds like a pretty big games workshop... recently went on up to the the Tottenham Court Road Games workshop, they've a life size chaos marauder statue in there thats pretty sweet, not to mention a much healthier stock of models than my local GW. (friend of mine tried to get a Tyranid trygon, eventually did in London lol)

Aw its a shame your not interested in the tabletop, i do have to admit though, the modeling and painting is quite relaxing if you want to just have a productive artful afternoon.

Played a few games recently and i haven't lost it... good to find out!

AH HA! a fan of the movement trays! and you're off to a tournament to boot, good luck!! i could never get into the tabletop portion of fantasy, wonderful models though... although as of late, the Lord of the rings models have looked a bit tasty, i almost bought some rangers... almost. lol. Goddamn games workshop... taking all my hard earned cash. =(

Just because i didnt play, everyone assumed i couldnt... :innocent:
Had a few wins in the practice games recently, so im happy with the selection we've gone for.
GW do that... but the money all goes back into making more lovely things ;)

I use the old Brown Ink a lot... otherwise, i tend to make my own washes by simply watering down the matte colours...
In this way, i can tone everything together :)

Yea,he was an experiment to see if i could work colours outside of my usual pallette into my work...i was expecting to get royally bashed by the Fluff Brigade on this one,but everyone seems to like it! :D
I did a new one recently,to see if i could make it stick again...seems this is how people wanna see Ultramarines :)
Thanks very much for the comment :)
