"Oh my...another finished piece already?!" I hear you cry...well,t'is true!
Yes indeedy,whilst i normally enjoy my painting anyway,some models seem to paint themselves,and this guy is definately one of them!
As im sure most of you will be aware,this is the brilliant,4 piece snap together captain from the 40k "Assault on Black Reach" box set,sculpted by the excellent Dave Thomas. I've loved this model since i saw the tiny picture in a promotional leaflet...i knew i'd end up painting him at some point!
So...a few points...
1) Theres a running joke in my local store that all i do is paint various shades of brown...whilst this MIGHT be true *sniffs* and normally i take it in my stride (its my style,dagnabbit) it recently DID make me think "can i work other colours into my pallette?" and so...i decided to make this chap an Ultramarine. They're often depicted as the clean cut,stereotypical example of a Space Marine Chapter,and in certain circles,get called "vanilla" and "a bit boring"...so i wanted to try and toughen the image up! I've worked my usual metallics and dirty effects,and then tried out some new stuff,adding some depth with colours,chipped armour and of course...BLUE!
I'm pretty happy with what ive ended up with,and,whilst i never normally time myself,i can confidently say i spent about 16 hours on this one...
2) Another aim for this piece was to show that you dont need an uber conversion for a decent result,i know a lot of my work is kit bashed,sculpted or whatever,and i get a lot of "i wish i could do that" comments...which is nice,but i feel perhaps that can be a bit disheartening to people that have just started the hobby...i know the feeling,been there! So this one is to show that you can take a model out of your starter set,and if you do the best job you can,end up with something to be proud of
3) I cant claim credit for the base...whilst i painted it,it was constructed by ~das-fet ... part of his ongoing battle to make me do better bases...
4) Finally,the last reason i painted this particular model,~witch-of-chaos submitted a version of this guy recently,and made me think "ah yea...i have him sitting around!"

I hope you boys and gals like him...I have the Ork Warboss waiting to be done,and i've never painted an Ork before...
