Black Templar I by Djartistknight Black Templar I by Djartistknight
Lots of people keep asking me to do a Space Marine here on DA...so here is one!
I really like Black Templars, the whole knightly crusade feel of them and the artwork GW put forth in their Codex is just superb...if i were ever to do a Marine army, these are the boys for me!
Anyway, this is just my usual plastic kit bash and green stuff combo, and he is to be a gift for a guy i do a lot of commission work for,he is a massive Black Templar fan too! He's been very good to me over the last year with work,so this chap is a gift for him to show my appreciation.
Not sure EXACTLY what he is...Sword Bretheren maybe :D
Black undercoat,GW acrylics and Tamiya Clear Glaze Orange.

May I ask how you did the beard? That head is magnificent!

Was it a specific piece somewhere, was it green stuff'd, etc?

If I can bother you about it, how did you go about painting his face and skin?

Its been a while but i imagine its the same as nowadays, if not similar...
Basecoat of Tanned Flesh and Codex Grey, highlight up with Pallid Flesh, wash down with Brown Ink and Scaly Green... Highlight up with Pallid again...
Pretty simple :)

Yea,i struggle with photos too...all i can really suggest is have a good camera (mine is 7.2 i think) and use a light tent in natural light...ive just about managed to get a consistent picture these days!

I have a question about glazing. Do you do this to preserve the figure and if so.....how would i go about doing this? I have a figure I would love to preserve.

Hmm,im not entirely sure what you mean by ';preserve'...if you mean how to protect the paint after you're done, theres many varnishes available to the painter! I personally use one a company called Vallejo do,its a great matte finish.
Glazing is the art of using other colours to enhance a layer on the model. An example on this figure in particular, look at his loincloth...I did a basecoat of Graveyard Earth, then used a few different browns and a green, really watered down,to colour the basecoat...using them in an order,i was able to create the shadows..once all that was dry,i took Graveyard Earth and rehighlighted the places i felt the light caught, then highlighted further. To tie elements of the model together, ive used the same colours for glazing too,to create a tonal feel...at least, that was the plan!
What ive just described is a bit advanced for a first go,glazing can be a lor simpler...as an example, you could do a basecoat,a few highlights, then glaze one colour over the top for a simple colour adjustment...
Hope some that helps!

It does thanks. I guess I was misreading your post when I was asking about glazing. I really meant a varnish finish to preservce the initial paint job. But thanks for the painting tips also. You have some awesome figures.

No worries!
As i said,i use a matte varnish Vallejo do,you have to paint it on with a brush, but i prefer it...some experiences ive had with various sprays has lead to a misted over finish...hardly what you want after hours spent on your model!
Cheers :)

I imagine Vallejo have a website, that'd be the first place to look...im lucky enough to have a store on my doorstep with all my hobby needs,so i personally have never needed to look too hard lol

Wait wait, is that chainmail underneath the loin cloth? you sculpt that?
Reply
:icondjartistknight:
Djartistknight Featured By Owner Oct 15, 2008
No.
I used the Fantasy Chaos Warrior legs as a basis, and then cut off the booted feet. Then i gave him new feet and greaves...where the cloak half of the Warrior body is missing,i then had to do all the back of his legs,so that includes the knee joins at the back...then,had to add a bottom, and the armour plate over that. At the back, behind the chainmail plastic bit that remained,i sculpted a piece of cloth.
Incidently, due to the legs and the reposed torso, this guy is about a head taller than standard Marine figures... :D

Is the armor all straight colors or metallics?

I mean it looks like straight colors obviously but I'd like to know for sure!

Excellent modeling though, did you do any carvering in the miniature itself or is it all stock bits w/ green stuff added?

I like that you got the crusader theme instead of the fanatic visage.

The armour is metallics, glazed with straight colours...
As said in the description,he is a plastic kit,Green Stuff hybrid, sculpting wise i did most of his legs, the belt detailing and the sword handle.
Yea...i prefer the 'crusader' idea,if i wanna do fanatics,i'll do Blood Angels lol

Nice! Amazing what just the paint job can do for a model?

The BA's are more bloodthirsty for the sake of being bloodthirsty, Sisters Repentia are more like fanatics!

Ive always thought a decent paintjob can do wonders for a figure...i've seen models i've previously hated transformed in the past by a great lick of paint!
Yeeea well...whatever...you get my drift...lol
I'd always pick Witch Hunters over any of the 40k armies anyway :p

Dude you've got to love Witch Hunters.

Nothing is more imposing than see a guy on a walking throne that can melt tanks and slice up Chaos Marines.

Personal request only....

I'd LOVE to see what you could do w/ Inquisitor Lord Karamazov!

I've loved the Sisters since Gav Thorpe wrote their first Codex for 2nd Ed 40k so...for me its all about the girls, the fact they added the dark Inquisitors to them is icing on the cake for me!
Was never fussed with Karamazov to be honest, the seat thing...meh...now the Living Saint, now you're talking...i painted one about 4 years ago,i really wanna do a new one!
Oh,and i have Gideon Lorr sitting about too,he's a lovely figure too...

And more hells yeah for girls I mean come on there was a time when I thought there weren;t ANY women at all in WH 40K.

I mean no 'regular' women, SOB's they're girls yes but the whole fanatic part sorta' nneeeeooooowwww.

The way he is holding his sword...i went for something a bit different,it's inspired by the Empire Greatsword models,i quite liked the look, and thought it suited the 'crusader/knightly' idea. I wanted a calm look really, more a display piece than a war/action pose...

Not really, the shoulder pads have a raised lip added to the top,so its perfectly fine where it is...that and he's a seasoned warrior,he'd know the perfect balance of his weapon...
So there! :D
Thanks though,he was a lot of fun :)
