Solace...

Journal Entry: Mon Jun 29, 2009, 12:52 PM
  • Mood: Miserable
  • Listening to: Rendered Summer...
  • Reading: Nothing...
  • Watching: Nothing...
  • Playing: Bits for Golden Demon entries...
  • Eating: Nothing...
  • Drinking: TEA!!
Just a quick one really...
Everything seems to be breaking at the moment! If its not one thing, its something else...right now,its my bloody modem,so my internet access is...well,dead really.
Whilst not a major drama to the majority of you peeps im sure, theres a few i talk to regularly on MSN,and so now,if you have wondered why i havent been about so much recently, this is why! Damned annoying...
Even more annoying,i enquired into getting a new one,and as the modem i had is so old, they said i need a "all new, improved one"...which im fine with...dont think i wanna pay for it though, considering all my years loyalty...its a big chunk, and im dubious as to whether i can afford to be bothered at the moment...i've certainly been more productive without it sitting in front of me all day ;)
Im still checking on new art by everyone, and keeping up with messages, one way or another,so you peeps carry on,i'll get to you eventually! :)
Work continues on my Golden Demon entries, one in particular is REALLY taking shape now,and im pretty stoked with it :D Maybe there'll be a sneak peak at a later date...i'll count votes on that and see ;)
Finally, the Title/Tune for this entry is an old progressive number, "Solace" by Medway...i recently completed a new mix cd, "Rendered Summer"...its full of happy vibes, from a variety of genres...a pleasant 2 disc listen if i say so myself...
Look after yourselves,i'll catch up with you peeps soon! :)
Love,Peace and Grease,
Ben x

Hey man, slightly random question, buy just for me to get an idea - how many layers would you guestimate you would lay down over an eldar model? Thinking here of your phoenix lord. (You know how it's always easier to do something if you've seen someone do it? well in lieue of seeing you do one I thought I'd try to imagine it! lol) I've been painting orks for ages now and I can't get my head out of my rough 'n' ready seven layer ork technique. Hope you're well!

Hmm,well, theres two approaches that i see...
Firstly,im assuming (judging by your other recent comment) that your Eldar are for gaming,so in a way, theres nothing wrong with a "seven layer" technique as such,it means you can get your army painted, and with the right colour choices and keeping them neat, you could still have a great looking Eldar force.
Now...the other way,and using my Phoenix Lord as an example...i couldnt even begin to think how many layers he has,it was a white basecoat, and all the colour and shading has come from LOTS of thin washes, applied to create the right shapes, and then highlighted back up...its certainly not for gaming pieces and without sounding harsh (i hope),not for unconfident painters...i did that Lord a few years ago now, mostly as an experiment, and i did feel out of my depth a lot of the time,he only got finished because of friends keeping on at me to finish him :)
I haven't gone back to the white undercoat since,i prefer my black...
If you wanna try at a style like my Phoenix Lord,i can send you the tutorials i was sent by an American friend of mine if you want (white undercoat is very popular out there for some reason!) so if you want a pop at it,sort me your email and i'll send them over for you to study :)
Let me know squire! :D

Ha ha, fair enough. I think I can safely describe myself as a confident painter, though not neccessarily a GOOD painter! lol. To be honest, I game so little, I'm usually more interested in painting and/or modelling. My ork army is the only one I really actually play with, if you know what I mean? Anyway, the tut's would be great if you don't mind sending them? My email's:

Thanks again, I look forward to seeing what I can do at my snails pace : )

As i teach any of the kids that ask me questions at the store, the first thing to have if you wanna learn anything is put the time in and be patient...you dont have to be "good" to progress and learn...you have to learn to become good ;)
So the fact you're willing to give it a go (ie - confident) is all you need. I'll send you the tutorials soon, hopefully by the end of the week/weekend,if thats ok :)
And dont worry about how slow you paint...slow and steady wins the race ;)

I think that's the one big thing I have taken away from my degree, that slow and steady wins the race...that no matter how long it takes quality is the issue not quantity. It's funny because that's always why I loved art, the attention to detail. Then at some point I kind of forgot that, no idea why, and it's taken a three year visual arts degree to get it back!
